Covid-19 and Racism

One is an arbitrary killer, which puts no value on life

The other holds an unspoken tenet: that some people are worth less than others

One is without consciousness, the other without conscience

One attacks vulnerable people, the other makes people vulnerable.

Both exhibit a lack of humanity, compassion, and reason

One is invisible to the naked eye; the other, insidious, is hidden in plain sight

One will, with perseverance, eventually be driven away by the ingenuity of mankind

The other will endure in the dark corners of men’s minds, until a cure can be found for prejudice.

Egocentricity

Why is it that not all can see

This universe exists for me

Plebs and vassals about this earth

None but me have much worth

I am not run-of-the-mill

But the exception; if you will

Hoi polloi may ever be

A unique status applies to me

Not expected to do my share

Of others’ plight, I need not care

So do your chores, hold open doors

Place my desires above all yours

Choices

Which sea denies the pull of the moon?

What puppet dances to its own tune?

A barbed and chastening valentine

No choice at all; the fault’s all mine

Could do better, the report card says

But how to change one’s errant ways?

Alas, some choices can’t be mended

Outcome’s not as was intended.

Each act’s curtain draws to a close

Why it matters, none other knows

Brexit Impasse

Just how crazy can it get?

This cruelly wasted chance

No clear way forward emerging yet

We’re being led a merry dance

‘Leaders’ push, pull, point, all in vain

They’re facing different ways

Concerned only, it seems, for political gain

Yet running out of days

Decision referred to a people’s vote

Then lurching to a general election

This circus must have seemed remote

All oblivious to sure EU rejection

Cometh the hour, cometh the man?

With courage to grasp the nettle?

A will-do attitude, not ‘no-can’

A LEADER who has some mettle

But no one out there seems up to the job

They’re letting the UK down

I’ve wasted two votes and want to sob

Was it me who was the clown?

Reflections by a Window

See, the world is still out there

Beyond the glass and frame

Lit by sun that breaks in here

Warming me the same

Sky shimmers in summer heat

Birds dash about for food

I rest on the window seat

In melancholy mood

I ponder on the happy scene

Of plants and living things

Wondering what it all means

And envy birds their wings
