One’s Lot

Pain and suffering

Misery, fear

Common hardships

Many must bear

Though some exist

Without such woes

Not mindful how

For others, it goes

But all will know

They share equal fate

When time is up

On that future date

What if, then,

Each gets their due

And what lies in store

Is all up to you?

If not so, fine!

Carry on as before

No need for insurance

Unless you’re not sure

If not this, what?

The rising sun and beating heart

Embracing lovers, soon to part

A furry friend, a solid rock

Hands marking time upon a clock

Tasting coffee, fresh from the bean

A peaceful moonlit landscape scene

Violent storm-tossed crashing seas

Gently humming honey bees

Are these and more as they seem to be,

If we each experience them differently?

Is life a dream, or is it real?

Do we know the answer, because we feel?

Unable to Stop the Winds of Change

003Unremarkably, the once still air begins to shift

Unnoticed, a zephyr wafts and eddies at your feet

Unaware, the leaves begin to dance in the breeze, grasses swirl, clouds scud

Unconcerned, draughts probe gently at loose clothing

Unhurried, gusts find purpose pushing against your weight

Unworried, you shield your eyes from wind- borne dust

Unthinking, you look down, leaning into the strengthening blusters

Unsighted, white horses race squall-tossed waves at sea

Uneasily, you brace your feet and set your chin to the storm

Unstable, branches break, boughs bend, roof tiles rattle

Unheard, distant winds circle faster, angrier, roaring, rumbling

Unbalanced, staggering, losing footing, hands clasp for purchase

Uncertain, heart pounding, succour is sought, prayers offered

Unknowing, whether the hurricane will pass, and you will be spared.

The Normal Distribution

img_2915Nature’s variations are somewhat formal

In mathematical terms, this is quite normal

Populations differ in similar ways

Pleasing to a statistician’s gaze

Organic aspects of our nations

Conform to standard deviations

Few data lie at each extreme

Most in the middle around the mean

Four quartiles cover the distribution

Analysis providing the whole solution

A bell curve puts the facts in order

Arranged beneath a symmetrical border

Seasons Passing

2001-02-02-00h49m41As silent frosts and gentle snow

Bid ‘sleep still’ to plants below

Winds at shivering branches tear

Threatening any that above ground dare

Icy cold, seeds wait their turn

To know what fate they are to learn

When Winter deigns to loose its grasp

As feeble shoots feint sunlight clasp

Then urgent as the days grow longer

Frenzied growth forever stronger

Through warming soil, tendrils searching

Stalk and leaves now skyward lurching

Green hued cells their magic weave

Creating starch, apart do cleave

In answer to Spring’s gleeful call

Across the earth new life will sprawl

‘Till basking in our young star’s rays

Countless flowers their heads do raise

Grasses nod, caressing the breeze

Pollen gathered by dutiful bees

The Summer months bring endless days

Fields, gardens, pastures, bright-cloaked in haze

With lengthening shadows soon to cast

The signal that this cannot last

Ripening fruits fill hedge and vine

Quick gathered in to make new wine

Nature’s harvest garnered and stored

Planet-bequeathed life-giving hoard

Leaves slowly rust in amber shades

And drop to lie in Autumn glades

A last joyful scent of this year’s roses

Then, once again the cycle closes.

What If?

2003-09-14-08h41m03Ere the cosmos clock’s first soundless tick

What ephemeral force might, knowing, quick

Call space, time and matter into being

From nought that is, we now are seeing

No corporeal hand did our world form

But flotsam from a primordial storm

And, if that, what then was there before

To will into existence new physical law

Cause stars and planets to outward flee

Some vectored origin that may not be

What vacuum do galaxies seek to fill

Time’s unknown boundaries testing still

Earthly minds can ne’er full hold

Understanding of creation’s mould

Except to note without illusion

Negative truths cannot be proven.

Morning

img_0453Westward crawling, sneaking

Stealing distant stars and galaxies

Summoning birds from their roosts

Commanded to herald the dawn

Half heard on slow shifting air

The sound near real,

but dimming against the growing chorus

And stirring clatter of movement

Night sighs and succumbs

Pulling dreams and fears

Under its dark cloak

Harboured against the bold tide of day.
