A corner building, grey and stark
Casts terror in its shadow
And evil’s chill lingers still
From times, not long ago
Ghastly crimes committed here
Repelling, but so real
With torture’s sound, below ground
To bring people under heel
A corner building, grey and stark
Casts terror in its shadow
And evil’s chill lingers still
From times, not long ago
Ghastly crimes committed here
Repelling, but so real
With torture’s sound, below ground
To bring people under heel
The truth of experience lies in change it brings
Yet all experiences change different things
What change might mean for you and for me
Ah, that’s the rub, we must wait and see.
Come, any who with half a mind
Acknowledge dangers threatening our kind
For to the brink the whole world teeters
Led this time by powerful tweeters
Let’s halt the madness, pause to say
This isn’t a price we’re willing to pay
Don’t threaten, but talk, face to face
Only this can save the human race

New weapons deal the deadly blow
To innocent passers by
Without just cause, except to say
Some don’t need a reason why
Then front line police, duty bound
Protect and pay high price
When madness sits behind a wheel
And throws its fatal dice
Poor old Tommy on that foreign street
Armed to the teeth, like some he’ll meet
How does he tell public from foe
The courts back in England say he should know
It’s the generals’ job to decide how and when
To train and deploy their brave fighting men
But when it goes wrong, poor Tommy’s to blame
Not those who sent him to fight in their name.
Of the myriad species with us here
Mankind, alone, might be aware
Marking time; possessing empathy
Self-consciousness and a will that’s free
Then why the folly of deadly strife
With religion oft cited to take a life
Which god asks people to kill the same
To glorify its works or defend its name
A divine being would not have need
To see its creations do bloody deed
If such actions must take place
They’re surely not done with any god’s grace
Greed and power are the reasons why
Tribe against creed vie and die
A deity cares neither for war nor peace
As paltry lifeforms squander their lease
A god doesn’t act as a grand puppeteer
Pulling strings to spread carnage and fear
A monotheist would only be benign
Free, not envious, of another’s design
So when in a god’s name we take its greatest gift
Perverting its cause to some meaningless rift
Know true to yourself that you are to blame
Or answer before it, and hang your head in shame.
Through holocaust and atom bomb yield
Cruelty and war, human nature revealed
Barbaric behaviour must surely cease
And people strive to live in peace
If mortal man holds life too cheap
By his own hand sad fate he’ll reap
Squandering life and every resource
No way found to a better course
The sun cares not for the human plight
It marks each day with its warming light
To our demise all assistance we lend
Our fragile existence we hasten to end..
