New weapons deal the deadly blow
To innocent passers by
Without just cause, except to say
Some don’t need a reason why
Then front line police, duty bound
Protect and pay high price
When madness sits behind a wheel
And throws its fatal dice

New weapons deal the deadly blow
To innocent passers by
Without just cause, except to say
Some don’t need a reason why
Then front line police, duty bound
Protect and pay high price
When madness sits behind a wheel
And throws its fatal dice
Pain and suffering
Misery, fear
Common hardships
Many must bear
Though some exist
Without such woes
Not mindful how
For others, it goes
But all will know
They share equal fate
When time is up
On that future date
What if, then,
Each gets their due
And what lies in store
Is all up to you?
If not so, fine!
Carry on as before
No need for insurance
Unless you’re not sure
A land of ageless boys, pirates and fairies
A vow between husband and wife
A resolution for the brand-new year
The chance to re-do this life

As steam from a kettle
And smoke from a pyre
Like a soldier in battle
Or a voice in a choir
A raindrop that falls
In an ocean so vast
Gives itself to the whole
Forgetting its past
Head to the light
That seems the advice
But no-one’s come back
To say that way is nice
Don’t worry right now
About what you will do
Whatever comes after
Is not up to you
But when the time comes
After one final breath
You’ll merge with the cosmos
That’s not really death.
Of the myriad species with us here
Mankind, alone, might be aware
Marking time; possessing empathy
Self-consciousness and a will that’s free
Then why the folly of deadly strife
With religion oft cited to take a life
Which god asks people to kill the same
To glorify its works or defend its name
A divine being would not have need
To see its creations do bloody deed
If such actions must take place
They’re surely not done with any god’s grace
Greed and power are the reasons why
Tribe against creed vie and die
A deity cares neither for war nor peace
As paltry lifeforms squander their lease
A god doesn’t act as a grand puppeteer
Pulling strings to spread carnage and fear
A monotheist would only be benign
Free, not envious, of another’s design
So when in a god’s name we take its greatest gift
Perverting its cause to some meaningless rift
Know true to yourself that you are to blame
Or answer before it, and hang your head in shame.
Through holocaust and atom bomb yield
Cruelty and war, human nature revealed
Barbaric behaviour must surely cease
And people strive to live in peace
If mortal man holds life too cheap
By his own hand sad fate he’ll reap
Squandering life and every resource
No way found to a better course
The sun cares not for the human plight
It marks each day with its warming light
To our demise all assistance we lend
Our fragile existence we hasten to end..
Only fools gravely utter
in their final croaking stutter
to those around the hushed deathbed
words and phrases best left unsaid.
Corrosive, amber, poison dram
Gnawing at liver’s health
Countless lives gone too soon
Stolen by lies and stealth
I know you well and will not yield
So try best to have your way
Your sirens’ call will fail to lure
I’m sure to win the day
But who can know your secret plan
What tricks you keep in store
To play on poor souls such as I
Who keep coming back for more.
Gone from our lives, forever
Though we chose the time in the end
Cancer riddled, but still loving
A kindness we hope, old brown friend
Pink liquid death in the vet’s syringe
She went quickly, on Mum’s warm knee
Was it right? We could only hope
To save her from pain and misery
Goodnight good soul in the fresh dug hole
Be at peace, in the garden you loved.
